Learn the Signapse Plugin
What is the Plugin?
The Signapse Plugin is a website accessibility tool that allows organisations to translate their website content into British Sign Language (BSL) or American Sign Language (ASL).
The Plugin is added to a website using a script tag and enables visitors to access sign language translations directly on the page, without leaving the site.
The Plugin supports three translation approaches:
- AI translations
- AI with Quality Control
- Human translations
The chosen approach is agreed during setup and determines how content is translated and maintained.
What Can You Do with the Plugin?
With the Plugin, organisations can:
- Make website content accessible in sign language
- Offer BSL or ASL translations directly on their site
- Allow users to control how they view signed content
- Improve accessibility without rebuilding their website
The Plugin works alongside your existing site and does not require redesign or structural changes.
How the Plugin Works
Implementation guides are provided to support technical teams during setup.
| Step | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Setup | Signapse provides a Plugin script tag |
| Installation | The organisation adds the script tag to their website |
| Configuration | Translation approach and default language are set |
| Live experience | Visitors access sign language translations on the site |
| Ongoing use | Content is translated based on the chosen approach |
Translation Options
The Plugin is configured to use one translation approach per organisation, agreed during setup.
| Option | Best For | How It Works |
|---|---|---|
| AI translations | Frequently changing content, instant access | Website content is translated instantly using AI. No web scraping required. |
| AI with Quality Control | Content needing additional confidence | AI generates the translation, which is quality controlled before going live. Web scraping required. |
| Human translations | High-importance or sensitive content | Content is translated fully by human translators. Web scraping required. |
Where Does AI Play a Role?
AI plays a role when AI translations or AI with Quality Control are enabled.
AI translations
- Content is translated instantly using AI
- No web scraping is required
- Content updates are reflected automatically as the website changes
AI with Quality Control
- AI generates the initial translation
- Webpages are scraped so content can be quality controlled
- Translations are reviewed before being made available via the Plugin
Human translations
- AI is not used
- Webpages are scraped and translated fully by humans
Web Scraping & Page Coverage
| Translation Type | Web Scraping Required | Page Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| AI | No | Available across all pages by default |
| AI with Quality Control | Yes | Only pages that have been scraped |
| Human | Yes | Only pages that have been scraped |
For AI with Quality Control and Human translations, organisations provide a list of webpages during setup. Only those pages will display translations in the Plugin. New or updated pages must be shared to be scraped and translated.
User Controls (Website Visitor Experience)
Website visitors can control how they interact with the Plugin.
| Control | What the User Can Do |
|---|---|
| Resize | Make the Plugin larger or smaller |
| Move | Drag the Plugin around the page |
| Play / Pause | Control video playback |
| Timeline | Jump to a specific part of the content |
| Playback speed | Speed up or slow down signing |
| Full screen | View the Plugin in full screen |
| Feedback | Submit feedback on Plugin performance |
Feedback submitted through the Plugin is sent directly to Signapse.
Language Support
The default language is set during setup. Where enabled, users will be able to switch languages within the Plugin.
